I gave people books they desired not long after the Door opened. No one seemed grateful. Ask around and you might find one or two in the city still.

No one desired these books. Not a single person.

[He pulls one from a pile offscreen -- just how many has he gathered outside of his dumb little fort? -- and gestures meaningfully with it.]

I want real books! With information in a language I can understand and that isn't about some data that makes no sense anyway. Some of these don't even have anything in them! I want to learn about interesting things. Other worlds, other people. Not the mechanics of a tractor -- although that one was fascinating for a good forty minutes.

Not those. You were not here, so you can't be expected to remember. I gave each person who was here a book they could read. Surely some of them are still around somewhere. No doubt those will be interesting, if you can find them.

[Huh. News to him... Makes him wonder why no one mentioned it before. Kind of pisses him off.]

...Okay. So that's maybe ten books at best? What's the point of this library? Why is it like this?

I didn't know how you might communicate. There are books in there you can read, yes? And there will be others that others can read. Entertain yourselves.

None of the ones I can read are very interesting, Hope. Can't you --

[He stops and takes a deep breath, trying hard to squash that rush of anger that was so common these days.]

Couldn't you just try a little harder? You know us humans a little better now, right? Or have you remained an idiot with the creativity of a limp noodle?

Try a little harder to entertain you? I'm wasting all my energy keeping you alive. Entertain yourselves, unless you would rather me spend energy on translating books than keeping you alive.

[With a long-suffering sign, Warrick pinches the bridge of his nose. He just...wants books... weh.]

...Keeping them alive. You're not really doing much for me.

That's good. You're rather unpleasant.

[That might have gotten him to bark out a surprised laugh, once. He can feel that like a fuzzy memory. Except now, the fuzziness feels a little more like nausea. Angry nausea.]

That isn't my fault! [...well.] Okay, it's sort of my fault because I did it in the first place, but I didn't ask to be taken, or kept far away from Emma! If you want me to play nice, then figure out a replacement for my heart for yourself!

I don't particularly care if you play nice or not. It's your fellow residents here who will have an opinion on that.

Why do you need a heart?

Because I don't have one, genius. And that tends to make one act, I don't know, heartless?

That isn't really my problem. If you wish to trade for a new one, that can be arranged.
