Somewhat. I think it's a combination between the energy and the very essence that makes up a person. A sinner has a soul that's corrupt in the way an innocent person's isn't.

[At least that's what Leo had always thought. Since there was only three of them, there was a lot he and his siblings still didn't even understand about their own species.]
